Tips for Staying Healthy This Back-to-School Season

With back to school around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can keep your child, and your whole family, healthy as you transition into the new school year. Life gets busy when school starts, so here are some simple tips that will help keep everyone in your household healthy:

Get Immunized, Wash Hands and Cough into Your Elbows

Unfortunately, kids get sick a lot. That said, as parents, it’s our job to help our kids ward off colds and flus as much as possible. Take your children to get their yearly immunizations with a friendly Center for Family Medicine physician. Also, encourage your children to wash their hands regularly, and, if your kids do get a cough, teach them to cough into their elbows, not their hands. This helps prevent the spread of germs so the rest of your family does not get sick.

Serve Healthy Foods at Mealtimes

For breakfast, lunch and dinner, feed your children balanced meals. Incorporate fruits and veggies into each mealtime, and try to encourage your kids to drink plenty of water. Some meals will be more balanced than others because you’re human, but to keep things as healthy as possible, try to meal prep to make mealtimes easier.

Make Exercise Fun

Getting active doesn’t mean that your kids have to come home from school and run a mile every day! Encourage your children to get moving by playing and having fun. You might encourage your children to join a soccer team, or you might encourage your children to play a game of kickball with the neighborhood kids. You can even get a dance-themed video game for your kids to get them moving on rainy days—make sure your kids know that exercise can be fun! Use inspiration and activity guidelines to learn more about getting the whole family moving.
