Springtime Is Here: Get Active and Eat Well

Spring’s warm temperatures and seasonal produce make it the perfect time to adopt a healthier lifestyle by getting active and eating well. Spring weather is a great incentive to get outdoors and move. Spring is also a wonderful time to take advantage of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season.

Go Outside and Get Moving

Enjoying spring weather and getting active doesn’t have to be complicated. Starting small is probably best for people who have been completely sedentary during winter. Taking short walks near home, near work, or at a park is a gentle way to get started. Gardening is another non-strenuous way to be active outdoors. People who are ready for increased levels of activity have more options. Hiking on local trails is a good choice for those who want an activity that doesn’t require special equipment or partners. Joining a team for a spring sport like softball or soccer is an option for someone who wants to combine exercise with a social outlet. Cycling has great fitness benefits and is a money saver when used to replace a car trip.

Eat Well with Spring Fruits and Vegetables

Physical activity and a healthy diet are a winning combination. Spring’s bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables makes spring the most delicious time of the year, apricots, mangoes, strawberries, and pineapple are examples of spring fruits. Fruit salads and breakfast smoothies aren’t the only way to add fruit to a diet, apricots can be grilled or added to chicken dishes, mangoes are a good base for salsa, pineapple could be part of a stir-fry. Spring vegetables include artichokes, broccoli, asparagus, and rhubarb. Roasting broccoli, making a rhubarb parfait, or dipping asparagus in sauce are some ways to experiment with spring vegetables.

Keep Up the Good Work Year Round

During the rest of the year photos, videos, social media feeds, or journals can serve as a reminder of how much fun springtime activities were, looking back helps to keep the momentum to stay active and eat well going throughout the year.
