Cold Weather Safety for Seniors
The cold winter months are coming. Although this season brings excitement, like the holiday season and sparkling snow, it is important for seniors to understand some basic cold weather safety protocols. The cold weather can be dangerous, but there are steps you can take to prepare.
How to “Winterize” Your Home
Before winter weather comes, you need to do some things around the house to “winterize” your home. Ask your neighbors or family members if they can help you clean out your gutters and disconnect your hoses to prevent damage from frozen water. Insulate your windows and doors to keep the heat in and lower your electricity bill. Check and replace your furnace filter to ensure quality airflow.
Safe Winter Exercise Tips
It’s important to keep moving, even in the winter. If heading outside isn’t an option, there are several ways to remain active indoors. Consider doing video-based workouts inside. The internet or local library provides many options. You can even complete an efficient workout sitting in a chair. Socialize with other seniors and check out a local gym for group fitness classes. If you go outside exercise, be sure you’re checking the weather before you do so. Wear layers of warm clothes and, of course, avoid exercising outside on icy days!
Prepare for Power Outages and Illness
It’s important to be prepared. Sometimes winter weather brings a power outage. To prepare for power outages, have battery-powered lights, non-perishable food, and several gallons of water on hand. To prepare yourself for getting sick (and to protect yourself from getting sick in the first place) get your flu shot and have plenty of cold medicine on hand.
